The Warsaw History Portal is the first municipal, multimedia website to bring together available knowledge about the capital – in the form of historical materials.
The website has been developed by the City of Warsaw in collaboration with, amongst others, the Museum of Warsaw, the Warsaw Uprising Museum, the House of Encounters with History, and the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. The portal presents content that has not been made available to the public until now. It can be accessed via a web browser on a computer or mobile devices.
Thanks to collaboration with partners that have provided content from their historical collections, the Portal features maps presenting the following:
– signboards in the Old Town;
– monuments and plaques;
– schools of Warsaw in the 17th–20th centuries;
– the Warsaw ghetto;
– hiding places for Jews during World War II;
– Warsaw Remembered;
– Warsaw Fortress;
– collections of the Museum of Warsaw;
– architectural designs by Zygmunt Stępiński;
– an audio map of the Warsaw Rising;
– parks – the green history of Warsaw.
There are also many aerial photographs, plans and archival maps, such as:
– Le Rogue’s plan from 1768;
– fortifications in 1831;
– Lindley’s plans;
– Warsaw in 1936–41;
– damage survey plan, 1945–1946;
– photographic sketches (1990–1994, 1976–1977, 1982, 1987);
– photo plans (2011, 2012, 2014, 2015–2021);
– orthophoto maps (2001–2025);
– orthophoto map of the Vistula, 2015.
Timelines are an interesting tool that present information in a clear, visual way – in the form of a comparison. Among other things, they have been used to illustrate aerial photographs and changes to Warsaw’s boundaries over the years. The content of the Historical Portal of Warsaw will be expanded, and new content will be announced in the news section on the Portal’s homepage.
